The examinations body has cancelled the registration of thousands of candidates as it investigates possible collusion in use of fake birth certificates during registration.
Parents and head teachers in schools countrywide might have colluded to use false birth certificates to register candidates for this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Its unfortunate that the affected candidates will not be allowed to sit the examinations later this year unless proper records are supplied and those behind the fraud punished.

Data shows that 1.78 million candidates were registered to sit the 2019 examinations, whose registration deadline was February 15. Of these, 1,089,671 were KCPE candidates while 698,935 students registered for KCSE, from all the 10,304 centers.

Meru has the highest number of cancelled registrations, with 23,806 candidates in primary and 3,646 in secondary schools. Marsabit has the fewest cases, with only 45 students’ registration questioned, of which 42 are in primary schools.

Kenya Secondary School Heads Association National chairman Kahi Indimuli said some birth certificates were not compatible with the National Education Management Information System.

  1. Issue of birth certificates is a big challenge especially in primary schools due ignorance of parents and the process of acquiring one is not very friendly to all people. So at primary level schools are left with no option but to use random numbers in order to register their candidates. I wish the government makes it more easier for candidates yet to acquire certificates. For those already registered for exams, should be allowed to do exams, without being registered. The birth process can as well be handled hand in hand with knec exams registered. With the government set for 100% transition from primary to secondary, all road blocks along the way should be removed

  3. The government should find new ways of issuing birth certificate in order to reduce the fake seekers as well as corrupt individuals.Affected candidates should be given enough time to provide for proper record and those behind the fraud to face the law.

  4. that number is too big. the parents and students affected some will suffer and get its not their fault. they should allow them do the exams as the parents try to amend the certificate issue. whoever will not prove innocent, their results be retained

  5. The government should find a way of streamlining the registration details of citizens right from birth. Methinks this cancelation is all because of poor government services when it comes to registration of infants. Parents rush to get these certificates later in life and end up not being accurate with details.
